Ubuntu install on Compaq Presario

I have a laptop from 3 years ago and I am installing Ubuntu on it to replace Windows. I had some issues originally that helped move me in the direction. It had some major driver errors. I formatted the drive using the windows install CD to fix the error I was receiving as it was stopping me from installing Ubuntu completely.

After I deleted the partition I installed Ubuntu 7.04 from a live CD. The install went great. I am working on configuring the system now specifically the Wireless. This is an issue with Old laptops I've found and there are good tutorials on how to overcome the issue on Ubuntu Forums

Once I get Ubuntu configured I'm going to do a post on awesome plugins and also links for people that are interested in starting with Linux but need a boost for starting.

Get rid of annoying automatic restart prompt after windows update

YAY!!! Lifehacker did a blog post on stopping the automatic restart timebomb that occurs after windows have performed an update. See details here

This is awesome as just two days ago I took a step away from my computer just long enough for the computer to restart. I'm glad Firefox auto restores tabs.

Using wikis for BI(Business Intelligence)

When I was at Linux World I sat in on a good session about BI(Business Intelligence) that talked about different open source software like Pentaho, Jaspersoft, and Actuate. During the session I thought about the work that goes behind BI and how intricate the programs are for aggregating content from within the organization. I looked at our company and other companies that I consult for in regards to the information that they would be pulling from and came to the conclusion that using a wiki is the best way to aggregate information from within the business when the complexity of the data isn't as extreme as larger corporations. With Deki Wiki's new backend web extension integration, doing this is simple. It takes the complexity out of BI and puts it in the hands of everyday users. Wikis have been used for replacing complex business infrastructure systems like intranets, so it isn't a big surprise that it is simplifying another aspect of the business world.

Linux World was awesome!! and San Deigo is on the Map....

Linux World just finished up and it was a great time. Went to a couple of parties including rPath and Creative Commons, and got a chance to hang out in the Novell booth where we were stationed. It was really good to demo the new Hayes release of Deki Wiki as it is such an awesome product, and did I mention...it is FREE to download. I had the link in my previous post but definitely check it out: http://www.GetDekiWiki.com

On a side note, the Google squad scoured San Diego and now it has been street mapped on google maps. It is pretty cool. They are doing some awesome things with the mapping. To check it out go to http://maps.google.com and search for San Deigo, CA...zoom in and then click on street view in the upper right corner, then click on any street and it will zoom in on it with real pictures.

That is all for now.

Deki Wiki is now available on virtual appliance

We just release Deki Wiki Hayes as a virtual appliance today. This is a great release for developers and end users. With this new release, we have a new support plan structure. There aren't any restirctions on users as there was before in regards to licensing. The software is 100% free, we recommend the support plan because of the updates that we notify the users of in regards to updates to the software and the stack. Check out the wiki now!

I am at Linux World right now and am enjoying every second of it. I haven't been to Linux World before so this is an awesome experience.

Web 2.0 Business Strategy

I was talking with a friend of mine yesterday and he said something that got me thinking. I was talking about an old business model for a company I had a while back and had mentioned that we tried subscription based but that is a hard model and I was left with advertising. My friend said, "well you could have done the Web 2.0 model". I inquired what it was, he stated, "don't charge anything and wait for Google to buy you out." It made me think about the current web 2.0 businesses and how there are some out there that are holding their breath waiting for the call from the big leagues(Google). There are a few companies out there though that may have started off on that road but because of different issues decided to work on turning the company into a business model that didn't rely on Google. To be honest, all business models in technology have some sort of acquisition factored into the exit strategy unless you are large enough to be the buyer, but I see more businesses putting a strong effort on coming out with great technology that businesses and consumers can use while charging an affordable price to make it financially feasible. What does this mean for the Web 2.0 movement? It means that eventually there will be a sifting of businesses and only the ones with a strong concept that are based on needs of consumers and businesses in the long run, will thrive. The rest of the companies will be phased out or acquired to be meshed into the surviving companies.
